What is the significance of using a dewatering screen for coal washing and sorting?

We all know that the mining industry cannot do without dewatering screens, as their applications are extremely widespread. Whether used in coal mines or other industries, they play a critical role in specific applications, and their presence is indispensable in the mining sector. However, what is the practical significance of using dewatering screens for coal washing and sorting in real-world applications?

1. Improving coal quality and reducing emissions of pollutants from coal combustion. Coal washing and screening can remove 50%–80% of ash and 30%–40% of total sulphur (or 60%–80% of inorganic sulphur) from coal. Burning washed coal can effectively reduce emissions of particulate matter, SO₂, and NOx.

2. Improving coal utilisation efficiency and conserving energy: Improved coal quality significantly enhances coal utilisation efficiency. Some studies indicate that a 1% reduction in ash content of coking coal reduces coke consumption in ironmaking by 2.66% and increases the utilisation coefficient of blast furnaces by 3.99%; Using washed anthracite in ammonia synthesis production can save approximately 20%; for power generation, each 1% increase in ash content reduces calorific value by 200–360 J/g, and increases standard coal consumption per kilowatt-hour by 2–5 g; industrial boilers and kilns burning washed coal can improve thermal efficiency by 3%–8%.

3. Optimising product structure and enhancing product competitiveness: The development of coal washing and beneficiation facilitates the transformation of coal products from a single-structure, low-quality format to a multi-variety, high-quality format, thereby achieving product quality improvement. China has a large number of coal consumers, and the demand for coal quality and variety is continuously increasing. In some cities, coal sulphur content must be less than 0.5% and ash content less than 10%; without the development of coal washing, these market requirements cannot be met.

4. Reduce transportation waste. Since coal-producing regions are often distant from economically developed areas with high coal demand, coal transportation volumes are large and distances are long, with an average transportation distance of approximately 600 km. After coal washing, a significant amount of impurities can be removed. For every 100 million tonnes of raw coal processed, 9,600 million tonnes-kilometres of transportation capacity can be saved.
